Litecoin is a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency created by Charlie Lee. It was created based on the Bitcoin protocol but differs in terms of the hashing algorithm used. Litecoin uses the memory intensive Scrypt proof of work mining algorithm. Scrypt allows consumer-grade hardware such as GPU to mine those coins.  Why Litecoin? Litecoin is a cryptocurrency that has evolved from Bitcoin after its own popularity in the industry, this alternative, or ‘altcoin’ has emerged to allow investors to diversify their digital currency package, according to Investopedia. Litecoin is one of the most prominent altcoins and was created by former Google employee and Director of Engineering at Coinbase, Charlie Lee. Litecoin was the first to alter Bitcoin and the most significant difference is that it takes 2.5 minutes for Litecoin to generate a block, or transaction, in comparison to Bitcoin's 10 minutes.  ‘While this matters little to traders, miners who use hardware to run Bitcoin's network cannot switch over to Litecoin. This keeps bigger mining conglomerates away from Litecoin because they cannot easily optimize their profits by swapping to another coin, contributing to a more decentralized experience. Litecoin also has bigger blocks, and more coins in circulation, making it more affordable and swift when transacting,’ Investopedia explained.  As explained above, Litecoin can transact a lot faster than Bitcoin, but there are also a number of other characteristics that investors need to know before trading. Litecoin can handle higher volumes of transactions because of the capability of transacting faster and if Bitcoin attempted to transact on the scale of its altcoin, a code update would be needed. However, Litecoin’s blocks would be larger, but with more ‘orphaned blocks'. The faster block time of litecoin reduces the risk of double spending attacks - this is theoretical in the case of both networks having the same hashing power.  Litecoin Technical Details: The transaction confirmation time taken for Litecoin is about 2.5 minutes on average (as compared to Bitcoin's 10 minutes). The Litecoin network is scheduled to cap at 84 million currency units.   Litecoin has inspired many other popular alternative currencies (eg. Dogecoin) because of its Scrypt hashing algorithm in order to prevent ASIC miners from mining those coins. However it is said that by the end of this year, Scrypt ASIC will enter the mass market.

Bitcoin (BTC) dipped below $100,000 for the second time this week as macroeconomic pressure continued to weigh on the cryptocurrency amid the ongoing government shutdown.Early Friday trade saw&nbsp;<a href="http://stocktwits.com/coins/bitcoin">BTC’s price</a> fall more than 3% to $99,800, according to CoinGecko data, after first dipping to $99,607 on Tuesday. The last time Bitcoin hit these levels was in late June, earlier this year.&nbsp;On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around the apex cryptocurrency dipped to ‘neutral’ from ‘bullish’ over the past day, as chatter remained at ‘high’ levels. He said the latter was linked to fallout from a $128 million Balancer exploit in the decentralized finance sector, which reignited concerns over protocol security.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Futures Unwinding Mostly Complete</h2>Panigirtzoglou noted that most of the futures unwinding is likely behind the market, suggesting a more stable near-term outlook for Bitcoin. JPMorgan strategist Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou said that Bitcoin’s steep decline in October was triggered by heavy deleveraging in futures markets. 

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>In the last 17 years, Bitcoin has gone from Satoshi’s Genesis Block to a $126,000 digital asset.</li><li>Bitcoin’s journey reflects a philosophical tension between decentralization and institutional adoption, with market capitalization surpassing $2.2 trillion.</li><li>Once designed to bypass intermediaries, Bitcoin now serves as a treasury asset, ETF investment, and hedge in the debasement trade.</li></ul>Seventeen years after the publication of Bitcoin’s (BTC) white paper, the cryptocurrency has grown far beyond its original ethos.&nbsp;Satoshi Nakamoto pitched “a purely peer-to-peer version of electronic cash” that would eliminate intermediaries and bypass traditional financial gatekeepers. The timestamped headline on the Genesis Block, mined on January 3, 2009, read, "Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks." It was a direct critique of a system that had erased wealth while protecting institutional actors during 2008 financial crisis.Today, that radical vision has been partially co-opted by the very institutions Bitcoin was designed to circumvent.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Centralization Forces Enter the Fray</h2>Strategy’s pivot in 2020 set the stage for this shift. Today, over 100 publicly listed companies across 29 countries hold more than 1.6 million Bitcoin, valued at $183 billion, according to&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.coingecko.com/en/treasuries/bitcoin">data</a> from CoinGecko. Bitwise data&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/BitwiseInvest/status/1978221667605176785/photo/1">shows</a> there are almost 40% more public companies holding Bitcoin today than there were three months ago.Regulatory frameworks, including the GENIUS, CLARITY, and Anti-CBDC Acts, have further normalized institutional participation.&nbsp;Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and digital asset treasuries (DATs) provide regulated channels for traditional investors, introducing centralized control and benchmarks to a system originally designed to bypass them.&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Decentralization Resists And Evolves</h2>Despite centralization pressures, decentralized exchanges (DEXs) continue to grow. According&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://defillama.com/">to</a> DefiLlama, DEXs recorded a historic monthly trading volume of over $585 billion in October 2025, surpassing the previous peak set in January 2025 during the emergence of meme tokens TRUMP and MELANIA.&nbsp;Meanwhile, macro uncertainty has elevated Bitcoin’s role in the “<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/bitcoin-was-the-only-answer-to-the-debt-crisis-strive-ceo/cLGFCkMR3xl">debasement trade</a>,” with investors using it as a hedge against dollar weakness. The surge above $126,000 in early October shows Bitcoin’s dual identity, explained in NYDIG's latest&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nydig.com/research/the-factors-driving-gold-and-bitcoin">research</a> report. It showed that Bitcoin tends to rise when the U.S. dollar weakens and liquidity improves.&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Market Growth Reflects Philosophical Shift</h2>More than a decade since the paper was published, Bitcoin’s market capitalization has surged past $2.2 trillion, with the asset reaching all-time highs above $126,000 per coin, earlier this month – driven, in part, by institutional adoption of the apex cryptocurrency. Bitcoin Turns 17: Price, Debasement Trade, And The Centralization-Decentralization Divide

Bitcoin’s 17-year journey has been a tug-of-war between its decentralized, anti-establishment origins and growing institutional adoption.

Morgan Stanley (MS) is reportedly expanding access to cryptocurrency investments for all clients, allowing such allocations in any account type, including retirement accounts.According to a CNBC&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/10/10/morgan-stanley-drops-crypto-fund-restrictions-for-wealth-clients.html#:~:text=Morgan%20Stanley%20on%20Friday%20told,crypto%20funds%20to%20any%20client">report</a>, citing people familiar with the matter,&nbsp; financial advisors were briefed on the policy change on Friday, with the new rules taking effect on October 15.&nbsp;<a href="http://stocktwits.com/symbol/MS">Morgan Stanley’s stock</a> edged 0.3% higher in morning trade. On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around the bank remained in ‘bullish’ territory amid ‘high’ levels of chatter.&nbsp;Previously, crypto investments were restricted to clients with aggressive risk tolerance and at least $1.5 million in assets who opted for taxable brokerage accounts, the report said. Anthony Pompliano, founder and CEO of Professional Capital Management and a prominent crypto investor, said on Tuesday that Bitcoin (BTC) is emerging as the new “hurdle rate” for investors.“Historically, we’ve looked at things like the S&amp;P 500,” he&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hse-H-JUXGY">told</a> CNBC in an interview. “Since 2020, the S&amp;P is up 100%, but priced to Bitcoin, it’s down 90%.”&nbsp;Pompliano added that most traditional finance returns fail to match Bitcoin’s performance, emphasizing the simplicity and scarcity of Bitcoin as key drivers of its appeal. “They are never going to stop printing money, so Bitcoin will never stop going up. Think of Bitcoin as savings technology: work hard, spend less than you earn, and put the extra into Bitcoin,” he said.&nbsp;<a href="http://stocktwits.com/symbol/BTC.X">Bitcoin’s price</a> was trading at around $125,000 in early morning trade on Tuesday after hitting an all-time high of more than $126,000 during the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/cryptocurrency/bitcoin-price-hits-another-record-high-as-it-surges-past-125800/ch6ROvTR3gt">previous session</a>. On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around the apex cryptocurrency trended in ‘extremely bullish’ territory amid ‘high’ levels of chatter.Pompliano noted that Bitcoin’s price is likely to keep rising because a growing share of BTC is being moved into illiquid supply, increasing pressure on prices. “Every Bitcoin that I buy, no one’s touching again until I die,” Pompliano said. “As more capital flows in and holders remain unwilling to sell, prices naturally rise to clear the market.”Pompliano also compared Bitcoin to gold, noting the overlapping interests of investors. “Bitcoin and gold are brothers in arms in the fight against currency debasement,” he said. “Gold has outperformed Bitcoin this year, but over the last five years, Bitcoin’s growth has far exceeded gold’s. Retail sentiment on Stocktwits around the apex cryptocurrency surged to ‘extremely bullish’ from ‘bullish’ territory over the past day amid ‘high’ levels of chatter. Since the U.S. government&nbsp;entered a shutdown&nbsp;on Wednesday, Bitcoin has gained&nbsp;more than 8%.&nbsp;According to Standard Chartered’s Global Head of Digital Assets Research, Geoff Kendrick, Bitcoin was&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/cryptocurrency/standard-chartered-sees-bitcoin-reaching-new-record-high-in-a-week/chCujhfR3QR">slated</a> to hit a new record and should rally as high as $135,000. “The shutdown matters this time around,” he wrote. “During the previous Trump shutdown, Bitcoin was in a different place than now, so it did little. However, this year Bitcoin has traded with ‘U.S. government risks’ as best shown by its relationship to U.S. treasury term premium.”Kendrick stated that Bitcoin has deviated from a historical pattern in which prices typically fell about 18 months after a halving.
