Rivian shares finished Tuesday with their biggest gain in nearly a month after the EV maker broke ground on a new Georgia plant that could eventually build 400,000 vehicles a year and create 7,500 jobs by 2030.The stock closed up 5.3% at $14.32 on Tuesday, with the stock adding another 0.7% in after-hours trading.Coming in two phases of 200,000 units each, the Social Circle plant will have an eventual capacity of 400,000 units. Building is expected to start in 2026 and production is scheduled for 2028. Rivian stated the plant will produce next-gen vehicles, including the midsize R2 SUV and R3 crossover.The investment is described as multi-billion-dollar. An analysis commissioned by the company estimated more than 15,000 direct and indirect jobs tied to the project, including about 2,000 construction jobs, with over $1 billion in annual labor income once fully operational.The development comes a month after&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/rivian-plans-shut-down-of-illinois-plant-for-three-weeks/chr1UQZRd5b">Rivian said that it will close its factory in Normal, Illinois, for three weeks</a> starting in September, as it ramps up for the launch of the R2 SUV in 2026.&nbsp;The midsize version is expected to launch in the first half of 2026 and is projected to have a price tag of $45,000. Rivian plans to manufacture validation builds of the vehicle later this year at the Illinois facility, which can produce up to 215,000 units annually. The company said the Georgia plant will provide additional capacity for the program.For the second quarter, Rivian reported revenue of $1.30 billion, up from $1.12 billion a year earlier, while its adjusted loss widened to $0.80 per share. It produced 5,979 vehicles and delivered 10,661 in the period. The company now expects 40,000 to 46,000 deliveries for 2025. Rivian Stock Soars On Georgia Plant Kickoff With 400,000 EV Capacity — Retail Hails ‘One Of The Best Technical Setups’

Rivian Automotive CEO RJ Scaringe&nbsp;believes the EV maker’s $5.8 billion technology alliance with Volkswagen Group will underpin the German automaker’s planned ID.1, a $20,000 EV he called Europe’s “answer to China.”&nbsp;Speaking at&nbsp;Morgan Stanley’s 13th Annual Laguna Conference on Thursday evening, Scaringe said the launch would draw close attention from competitors.“Every car company will buy it. BYD will buy it. Xiaomi will buy it and XPeng will buy it,” he said. He added that they would be “impressed” by the vehicle’s network architecture, ECU layout and electrical systems, which were designed to scale from VW’s entry-level models to Porsche and Audi flagships.R2 Autonomy&nbsp;To Leap Beyond HighwaysScaringe also spotlighted Rivian’s own product pipeline, led by the $45,000 R2 five-passenger SUV. While Rivian already offers hands-free driving on highways, he said the next step is “hands-free everywhere,” followed by “eyes-off” operation and eventually turn-by-turn autonomy.&nbsp;He said that&nbsp;the shift represents “something like a 50x increase in the number of roads that the vehicle is going to be able to drive on, driving itself.”The company plans to hold an event at the end of the year to showcase its autonomy technology, including hardware details, its compute and perception stack, and demonstrations of the system in operation.Scaringe forecast that hands-free driving on all roads will expand next year, with “eyes-off” autonomy targeted for 2027–2028. He said that if executed well, the feature could “unlock massive pools of demand” and significantly expand Rivian’s customer base.Data Flywheel Powers Rivian’s AI TrainingRivian’s Gen2 system marks a clean break from the Mobileye-based setup in its first vehicles. Scaringe said Rivian brought its compute, sensors and perception fully in-house, enabling the company to build a “data flywheel” to train its autonomy system using real-world driving data collected from its fleet.He said Rivian’s smaller vehicle base compared with Tesla’s is offset by advanced camera and radar systems, particularly 3D imaging radar, which helps improve training in difficult conditions like rain or fog.Not Enough EV Choices Under $50KScaringe&nbsp;reiterated that EV adoption in the U.S. remains stuck at around 8% because of limited options for mainstream buyers. “The number of great choices [under $50,000] is well under the number of fingers on my hand,” he said, pointing to Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y as the only broadly compelling choices today. Tesla, GM, Other EV Sales To Tumble By 50% As Trump Ends Federal EV Credits Later This Month, Says Expert: Report

According to auto analyst Karl Brauer, EV sales could rise in the third quarter due to a potential rush to claim federal tax credits, but there could be a steep decline after the deadline kicks in.

Nio outperformed all major auto peers in August, recording the biggest one-month return while rivals such as Li Auto and BYD lagged behind.U.S.-listed shares of the Chinese EV maker&nbsp;were up 35.5% for the month, outperforming gains in XPeng, which rose 14%, along with 4% gains for both Tesla and Rivian, as well as 0.4% for Xiaomi, and losses of 15% each in both Li Auto and BYD.The Chinese EV maker also recorded its best-ever monthly deliveries, sending 31,305 vehicles to customers last month, representing year-on-year growth of 55% and an increase of 49% from July, after the company surpassed the record it set in December last year, according to a CnEVPost&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://cnevpost.com/2025/09/01/nio-delivers-31305-cars-aug-2025/">report</a>.&nbsp;The performance was driven by sub-brands Onvo and Firefly, both of which hit record highs. Onvo delivered 16,434 units, including 10,575 of the new L90 SUV, which launched on July 31 and began deliveries the following day.&nbsp;The L90 became the fastest model in Nio’s history to cross 10,000 units in its first month. Firefly delivered 4,346 vehicles in August, an 84% increase from July. The company began sales in Norway and the Netherlands, and sold out a 333-unit limited edition in China within 30 hours. The main Nio brand was weaker, delivering 10,525 vehicles in August, down 48% from the same period a year earlier and 17% from July.From January to August, Nio delivered 166,472 vehicles, up 30% from the prior year, including 54,272 from Onvo and 14,555 from Firefly. Cumulative deliveries stood at 838,036 by the end of August.&nbsp;In 2024, the company delivered 221,970 vehicles, up 39% from 2023, spanning both its premium Nio brand and the lower-cost Onvo line launched in May 2024.The company began pre-sales of its third-generation ES8 SUV on Aug. 21 ahead of an official launch at Nio Day in late September. CEO William Li said reservations were strong, even exceeding those for the Onvo L90.Meanwhile,&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/jpmorgan-upgraded-nio-shares-with-price-target-hike/chsHCIGRdjA">JPMorgan upgraded Nio to ‘Overweight</a>’ from “Neutral” in August, raising its price target to $8 from $4.8. The bank’s equity research arm highlighted three upcoming events: the release of second-quarter results on Sept. 2, the formal launch of the ES8 at Nio Day on September 20, and the anticipated unveiling of the Onvo L80 SUV at the Guangzhou Auto Show in November.
