Ripple is the catchall name for the cryptocurrency platform, the transactional protocol for which is actually XRP, in the same fashion as Ethereum is the name for the platform that facilitates trades in Ether. Like other cryptocurrencies, Ripple is built atop the idea of a distributed ledger network which requires various parties to participate in validating transactions, rather than any singular centralized authority. That facilitates transactions all over the world, and transfer fees are far cheaper than the likes of bitcoin. Unlike other cryptocurrencies, XRP transfers are effectively immediate, requiring no typical confirmation time.  Ripple was originally founded by a single company, Ripple Labs, and continues to be backed by it, rather than the larger network of developers that continue bitcoin’s development. It also doesn’t have a fluctuating amount of its currency in existence. Where bitcoin has a continually growing pool with an eventual maximum, and Ethereum theoretically has no limit, Ripple was created with all of its 100 billion XRP tokens right out of the gate. That number is maintained with no mining and most of the tokens are owned and held by Ripple Labs itself — around 60 billion at the latest count.  Even at the recently reduced value of around half a dollar per XRP, that means Ripple Labs is currently sitting on around $20 billion worth of the cryptocurrency (note: Ripple’s price crashed hard recently, and may be worth far less than $60 billion by time you read this). It holds 55 billion XRP in an escrow account, which allows it to sell up to a billion per month if it so chooses in order to fund new projects and acquisitions. Selling such an amount would likely have a drastic effect on the cryptocurrency’s value, and isn’t something Ripple Labs plans to do anytime soon.  In actuality, Ripple Labs is looking to leverage the technology behind XRP to allow for faster banking transactions around the world. While Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are built on the idea of separating financial transactions from the financial organizations of traditional currencies, Ripple is almost the opposite in every sense. Futures tied to the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq 100 indices rose late Wednesday, signaling that these averages could make good the losses experienced after the Federal Reserve’s rate decision. The Jerome Powell-led Fed cut rates by a quarter-point, aligning the expectations, but the major averages, excluding the Dow Jones Industrial Average, lost ground, potentially in a “sell-the-news” move.As the market looks past the Fed decision, the Nasdaq 100 futures rose over 0.62% as of 11 p.m. ET on Wednesday. The S&amp;P 500 and the Dow futures added 0.43% and 0.29%, respectively, and the Russell 2000 futures climbed 0.54%.The markets closed on a mixed note on Thursday as traders took stock of the Fed decision, the updated forecasts, and the dot plot, along with Powell’s comments at the post-meeting press conference. Typical of a Fed decision day, the averages treaded water before the verdict was announced but spiked higher on the announcement. As investors digested the rest of the news flow surrounding the rate decision, the optimism gave way to skepticism.Economists and market watchers called out the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting for being a&nbsp; “mess,” as they took exception to the wide spread of the dot plot, which reflects the expectations of the 19 policymakers.Macro strategist Jim Bianco viewed this as undermining the Fed’s credibility. The strategist views this as boding well for value-oriented sectors and smaller companies as the market broadens.Bolvin Wealth Management Group President Gina Bolvin said the Fed decision wasn’t a pivot, but a measured step.“For investors, this means modest rate relief, not fireworks,” she said, adding that rate-sensitive sectors like housing and consumer discretionary may benefit. “The Fed is walking a fine line, and upcoming inflation and jobs data will determine what comes next,” she added.Crude oil prices retreated late Wednesday, adding to their regular session’s losses, and gold futures also pulled back. Fed Sees "Two-Sided Risk" in Lowering Interest Rates

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday cut the key borrowing rate by 25 basis points, bringing down the federal funds rate to the 4% to 4.25% range, in line with market expectations.This is the first rate cut announced by the Fed in 2025.&nbsp;The rate reduction comes at a time when inflation hasn’t shown any signs of a significant rise.&nbsp;On Tuesday,&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/trump-fed-should-be-independent-should-listen-to-smart-people-like-me/chwylmVRdzX">President Donald Trump stated</a> that while the Fed should be independent, it should also listen to “smart people” like himself.The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) highlighted the moderation in economic activity. It also touched upon the weakness in the labor market, stating that “job gains have slowed” while noting that inflation remains “elevated.”“Uncertainty about the economic outlook remains elevated. The Committee is attentive to the risks to both sides of its dual mandate and judges that downside risks to employment have risen,” the FOMC said.The Committee voted 11-to-1 to cut rates by 25 bps, with President Trump’s pick and newly-confirmed Governor, Stephen Miran, voting for a 50 bps cut.&nbsp;According to the dot plot projections, one of the votes was in favor of a 125 bps cut this year. Overall, nine of the 19 participants favored one additional cut, while 10 voted in favor of two cuts.Earlier, President Trump called on Fed Chair Jerome Powell to be open to feedback and to listen to him. “If you look, all the economists got it wrong, I got it right along with some other people out of a hundred. So they should listen to people that are smart, there’s nothing wrong with that, but they have to make their own choice. But they should listen,” Trump told reporters at the White House.Meanwhile, U.S. equities edged lower in Wednesday’s midday trade. The Federal Reserve’s crucial interest rate decision is scheduled to be announced on Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET. The Federal Open Market Committee’s (FOMC) meeting kicked off on Tuesday to review the latest economic data, and it will conclude on Wednesday.Markets widely expect the central bank to cut the benchmark rate by 25 basis points – the CME FedWatch&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool</a> points to a 94% probability of a rate cut.Boosting the hopes of a rate cut during the September meeting is a weak labor market and soft inflation – the consumer price index (CPI) rose&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/us-consumer-inflation-august-cpi-report/chwNSJ9Rdvi">2.9% annually</a> in August, in line with Wall Street expectations. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reportedly made a similar mortgage pledge as Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, who was fired by President Donald Trump over what he termed as “potentially criminal conduct.”According to a Bloomberg&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-09-17/bessent-like-fed-governor-made-contradictory-mortgage-pledges">report</a> citing Bessent’s mortgage applications with Bank of America Corp. (BAC), the Treasury Secretary agreed to occupy two different homes as his “primary residence” simultaneously,&nbsp;a pledge similar to the one made by Cook.Bessent secured financing from Bank of America for the two houses and other assets, totaling $21 million, in 2007. The first one was for a seven-bedroom Georgian manor in Bedford Hills, New York, and the second one for a beachfront house in Provincetown, Massachusetts, according to the report.It also noted that Bank of America had an “understanding and agreement that the Bedford and Provincetown properties were secondary residences.” Charles Rich, the lawyer who signed on Bessent’s behalf, added that the lender was “fully aware” of the situation.This comes after President Donald Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/trump-says-will-fire-fed-lisa-cook-if-she-does-not-resign/chsZ3lYRd06">announced</a> in August that he would fire Cook due to allegations of mortgage fraud.
