The company stopped making purely internal combustion engine vehicles in March 2022 and, since then, has made “new energy vehicles,” a wider term that encompasses both battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.As of the end of October this year, the company had sold over 3.7 million vehicles, marking a year-on-year growth of about 14%. That marked a 29.41% jump from the second quarter and a 7.39% year-on-year increase, marking a momentum TrendForce attributed in part to U.S. subsidy deadlines and Tesla’s return to quarterly growth in China.The company’s performance widened the competitive pressure on BYD, though BYD continued to hold the overall lead in fully electric models.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Other Chinese Automakers Gain Ground</h2>A wave of Chinese manufacturers also showed sharp gains. Geely Auto and Leapmotor recorded strong momentum, taking 6% and 4.1% of global BEV share, respectively. Xpeng ranked sixth with 3.1%, while Xiaomi ranked eighth with 2.9%.In the plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) segment, Aito, Chery, and Geely took the next three spots behind BYD.&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Li Auto Loses Ground Amid Intensifying Competition</h2>Li Auto, the runner-up in PHEV sales in the second quarter, had its share challenged as additional automakers entered the fray with extended-range EVs. Sales in Q3 slipped to 93,211 vehicles, a 39% decline on an annual basis and down 16% from the previous quarter.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Global EV Market Continues Expanding Rapidly</h2>TrendForce noted that global sales of new energy vehicles (NEV) hit 5.4 million units in Q3, rising 31% year on year. Sales of BEVs hit 3.71 million units, growing by 48%. His remarks come as Tesla launches a U.S. rental program to address slumping EV demand, faces executive exits, and CEO Elon Musk revives Cybertruck promotion.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Gary Black Renews Valuation Critique</h2>The Future Fund’s Managing Partner, Gary Black, reiterated his bearish stance on Tesla’s valuation, calling investor faith in its robot and autonomy roadmap a “fool’s narrative” given that more than 70% of Tesla’s profits still come from electric vehicles.“Tesla bulls say it doesn’t matter that Tesla October global volumes are down 30–35% year over year since the business is transitioning to unsupervised autonomy and humanoid robots. Black said fully autonomous ride-hailing is a commodity business where Chinese manufacturers like Baidu, Pony.ai, and WeRide already complete around 450,000 paid fully autonomous rides each week and plan to license their technology broadly.“I have said for years that unsupervised autonomy is table stakes for anyone in the automotive business, and that prediction looks more prescient every day,” Black added, noting that few Wall Street models project meaningful profits from autonomous ride-hailing or humanoid robots. “It’s hilarious that Tesla bulls cheerlead without even attempting to justify Tesla’s valuation.”Black concluded that Tesla’s 200x forward price-to-earnings ratio is “difficult to justify in what is clearly a commodity business… where Tesla is one of many fighting for market share.”<h2 class="st-heading-2">Tesla Turns To Rentals As US Sales Slide</h2>Amid a sharp slowdown in U.S. demand following the end of the federal EV tax credit, Tesla has launched a new short-term rental program at select stores. The initiative lets customers rent vehicles for three to seven days at rates starting at $60 per day, including free Supercharging and access to Full Self-Driving (Supervised), according to an Electrek&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://electrek.co/2025/11/10/tesla-cant-sell-cars-so-renting-them-now/">report</a>.Tesla said renters who order a car within seven days of their rental will receive a $250 purchase credit. The growth in volume, as per Citi which met with BYD management on Tuesday, will apparently be driven by new model launches.According to Citi’s report, the Europe, North America, and ASEAN regions accounted for one-third of total overseas sales in 2025, Reuters noted.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Decline In Capex</h2>The company also expects a significant decline in capital expenditure in 2026 as vehicle and battery production capacity meet demand, the report added.Citi, however, did not divulge the company’s overall sales target for next year, Reuters noted. For 2025, the company aims to deliver a total of 4.6 million vehicles, up from the 4.27 million sold in 2024. Tesla Sales In Germany More Than Halve In October Despite EV Demand Growth

Tesla sold just 750 cars in Germany in October, marking a dip of 54% year-over-year.

According <a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://cnevpost.com/2025/11/04/tesla-china-oct-2025-wholesale/">to</a> CnEVPost, this is also the lowest monthly number since May.Tesla manufactures the Model 3 and Model Y at this Shanghai gigafactory, both for sale in China and export to select external markets, including Europe.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Rival Performance</h2>Meanwhile, Tesla’s biggest rival BYD Co (BYDDY, BYDDF) saw global passenger battery electric vehicle <a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/sehk/2025/1102/2025110200113.pdf">sales</a> rise 17% to 222,559 units last month.However, overall vehicle sales fell a deep 12% to 441,706 units, marking the second consecutive month of decline. BYD, unlike Tesla, makes both battery electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Model Y, 3 Variants In China</h2>Tesla announced a longer version of the Model Y SUV in China in August with a starting price of 339,000 yuan ($47,605.67), 29% more expensive than the base variant of the SUV. The vehicle features three rows of six seats and is also longer than the average Model Y, measuring approximately 196 inches, compared to 189 inches for the other variants. This variant of the SUV is unavailable in the U.S., and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously said that the variant will not start production in the U.S. until at least the end of next year.Meanwhile, the company is yet to launch the standard and cheaper versions of either the Model Y or 3 in China. Tesla’s China-Made EV Sales Reportedly Drop 10% In October, Lowest Since May

According to CnEVPost, Tesla China’s October sales numbers mark the lowest monthly number since May. 

Shares of BYD fell 2.5% in Hong Kong on Friday after China’s market regulator said the automaker will recall more than 115,000 vehicles, its largest recall to date, over design flaws and battery-related safety risks.The news is likely to weigh on&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/BYDDF">BYD’s U.S.-listed stock</a>, which has already slipped about 0.4% so far this week.Regulator Flags Safety Issues&nbsp;According to the State Administration for Market Regulation, BYD has filed plans to recall 44,535 Tang series vehicles produced between March 2015 and July 2017, citing component design defects that could cause abnormal function, Reuters&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/climate-energy/byd-makes-largest-recall-over-115000-cars-due-design-battery-issues-2025-10-17/">reported</a>.The company will also recall 71,248 Yuan Pro electric vehicles manufactured between February 2021 and August 2022, due to manufacturing problems linked to battery installation that could pose safety risks.In January, BYD recalled about 6,800 Fangchengbao Bao 5 plug-in hybrid SUVs over potential fire hazards. The company also pulled back nearly 97,000 Dolphin and Yuan Plus EVs in September 2024 due to steering control unit issues that raised fire concerns.Delivery Growth Slows&nbsp;The recall follows a&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/byd-reports-5.5-percent-sales-decline-in-september/chCYJzjR3aH">weaker sales report</a> earlier this month, when BYD said it delivered 396,270 new energy vehicles in September, down 5.5% from a year earlier.That total included 393,060 passenger vehicles, 3,210 commercial vehicles, and 71,256 exports. Battery electric models accounted for 205,050 units, while plug-in hybrids contributed 188,010 units.Across the third quarter, BYD sold over 1.11 million vehicles, with 582,522 battery electric cars among them. BYD Stock Dips In China After Largest Recall Yet Over Battery Risks, Design Flaws

BYD tightened its hold on China’s electric vehicle market in September, outpacing Tesla as local automakers pulled further ahead.The Warren Buffett–backed company sold about 347,000 new energy vehicles during the month, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), keeping its spot at the top of the rankings even with a slight dip from last year’s levels, CnEVPost&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://cnevpost.com/2025/10/15/automakers-share-china-nev-market-sept-2025/">reported</a>.BYD’s sales were down 10.2% from last September but up 12% from August, giving it a 26.7% market share, well ahead of every other automaker in the country.&nbsp;Tesla, meanwhile, ranked fifth with 71,525 vehicles sold, a 0.9% drop from a year earlier but a 25% rebound from July. Its 5.5% share edged higher from August but remained below levels seen last year.Close behind BYD, Geely Auto held on to second place with 150,570 sales in September, a sharp 68% increase from a year earlier. Xiaomi EV stayed in the top 10 after selling 41,948 units, marking its second month on the list.From January to September, BYD’s dominance has been even more pronounced. The company has sold over 2.54 million NEVs so far this year, commanding nearly 29% of the market.
